MELLOR: “WE’VE GOT STAY CONNECTED”

Joe Mellor has called on the importance of ‘staying connected’ as Salford Red Devils prepare to take on Warrington Wolves.

Sam Burgess and co have enjoyed a positive start to 2024 and currently sit in fourth place after six wins from their first eight Betfred Super League fixtures.

Couple that with a Challenge Cup semi-final spot and the Wire will be feeling nothing but positivity coming into Saturday’s crunch clash.

Speaking to our YouTube channel earlier this week, Joe Mellor believes the team have to be switched on defensively to deal with the likes of Matt Dufty and George Williams.

He said: “They’re looking pretty good, pretty strong, pretty skilful, so we know it’s going to be a tough game this weekend.”

“I think we’ve just got to stay as a line, stay connected. They want us to jump out and open up spaces for them, but the main thing is staying connected as a team, defensively.”

Mellor has operated at hooker since his move to the club from Leigh Leopards and is looking to kickstart a run in the team following an injury to Amir Bourouh.

“Yeah, it’s been good – I’ve enjoyed it since I’ve came.

“Obviously getting injured wasn’t in the plans, but now I’m back playing, I’m pretty happy and just want to enjoy my rugby now.”

A natural halfback, Mellor has been discussing how he’s found shifting into an unfamiliar position.

“I don’t mind it,” he said, “I’ve never really minded it when I moved into that position last year.

“I just try and see the game as a halfback like I am, but if any quick play-the-balls are there I just want to be there to take them.”
