THE ORIGINAL RED DEVILS

MATCH PREVIEW – SALFORD RED DEVILS VS LEIGH LEOPARDS (ROUND 6)

Attentions have firmly switched back to Betfred Super League action, with Leigh Leopards the visitors in Round 6.

Last Friday, Hull KR scored seven tries without reply at Craven Park – ending Salford Red Devils’ Challenge Cup hopes for another season.

However, Paul Rowley’s side have made a positive start to 2024 in Super League; winning three of the first five – including a memorable performance against St Helens in Round 4.

Even in the two games we fell to defeat, the Red Devils have been highly competitive, with late tries from Leeds Rhinos and Wigan Warriors ultimately the difference.

The Leopards are the latest challenge. Adrian Lam’s team – missing one match due to the World Club Challenge – have picked themselves up from three consecutive defeats by thumping Hull FC 4-54 in Round 5.

SQUAD NEWS

There’s only one change to our 21-man Challenge Cup squad.

Gil Dudson, who recently joined the club on loan from Warrington Wolves, misses out due to injury, with Kai Morgan back in his place.

One piece of good news for Salford supporters is the inclusion of Ryan Brierley, who limped off last Friday, but is part of Rowley’s squad for Saturday.

LAST TIME OUT

Our last meeting with the Leopards was our third of the 2023 season.

Salford had already tasted opening day and Rivals Round success against the same opposition, but Leigh were full of confidence and challenging for a spot in the top six when they visited the Salford Community Stadium in Round 19.

Tries from Ken Sio, King Vuniyayawa and Andy Ackers handed us a six-point lead after a frantic opening 40 minutes, with the boot of Marc Sneyd making things happen for Salford.

Ben Hellewell added to the lead after the break, but Leigh battled back to level the scores with 10 minutes remaining.

Trading sets, Salford were the first to blink and concede a penalty which allowed Ben Reynolds to nudge over the two points which won the contest.
