Red Devils fall short against Wigan

Red Devils lose out to Warriors.

Salford Red Devils fell to a 16-26 defeat to Super League Champions Wigan Warriors in the opening game of the season.

Salford came into the game on the back of an unbeaten pre-season but where without Ben Murdoch-Masila, Logan Tomkins and Weller Hauraki.

Salford started the game brightly and put Wigan under pressure but it was the Warriors who scored first with Oliver Gildart getting on the end of a a clever attacking kick.

Wigan scored again against the run of play shortly after with Joe Burgess marking his return to the Wigan side with a try, again coming from an attacking kick.

Salford enjoyed spells of good possession and territory but Wigan went on to extend their lead, Gildart getting his second try of the afternoon.

Wigan now had the momentum behind them and finished off the first half with two further tries from George Williams and Joel Tomkins to make the score 0-26 at the break.

Salford made a much better start to the second half and finally got on the score board when Kriss Brining dived over to score on his Super League Debut.

Salford by this point were enjoying the better of the possession and soon scored again when Junior Sa’u forced his way over.

Michael Dobson then added an extra try with 5 minutes left following a spilt high kick, but Salford were unable to chase down the remaining deficit.
