Hankinson played his junior at the Ashton Bears. He was in the junior systems of the Salford City Reds, but did not progress through to the first team.
Chris Hankinson first season was for Leigh Centurions in 2014 and he stayed there for 2 years until 2016. While playing for Leigh he played 7 times and scored 2 tries. While still at Leigh, Hankinson went on loan to Barrow Raiders in 2015 and 206, in total playing 48 games for them and scoring a combined 23 tries over the 2 seasons. In the 206 seasons for Barrow Raiders, he got 88 points from goals.
His next team was Swinton Lions, after the 2 loan spells at Barrow, this was at the start of the 2017 season. While at Swinton he played 52 times and scored 15 tries and got 83 points from goals. After this season he moved to Wigan in 2018. He moved to his hometown club in July 2018, and he made his Super League debut for Wigan in the derby against St Helens. He played there a season with 2 games with 1 try, after 1 season there he went back to Swinton on loan for a season and played 8 matches in the championship. In the 2020 season Chris won a league leaders medal with Wigan.
On 31 December 2020 it was announced that he had signed for the London Broncos for the 2021 season. He made 11 appearances and scored 6 tries and 48 points from goals that season. This was a loan move from Wigan.
On 9 November 2022 it was announced that Hankinson had left Wigan and signed for Toulouse Olympique on a two-year deal. He will become the third goal-kicker at Toulouse. He played 25 games that season with all of them starts for Toulouse. He scored 5 tries and 64 points from goals.
On 17 October 2022 it was announced that Hankinson had signed for Featherstone for the 2023 season. He played 18 games, scored 7 and got 18 points from goals. On December 8th Chris Hankinson 2023 he signed for Salford Red Devils in the Super league.
