THE ORIGINAL RED DEVILS

MATCH REPORT | WIGAN WARRIORS 28 – 12 SALFORD RED DEVILS | FRIDAY 28TH JUNE

Tries from Kris Welham and Derrell Olpherts were not enough to see Salford Red Devils claim a victory on their visit to the DW Stadium.
The hosts recorded a 28-12 win to prevent the Red Devils climbing to fourth place in the Betfred Super League table.
Krisnan Inu claimed the first points of the half from the tee in the fifth minute, kicking a penalty after Ryan Lannon had put the Red Devils in a try-scoring position. Wigan followed in suit, with Hankinson slotting a penalty over in the 20th minute.
The hosts then took the lead, as Liam Marshall dived over in the right corner. Joe Greenwood then pounced on a grubber-kick down the opposite flank to put his team two scores in front.
Salford were then granted a perfect opportunity a minute from half-time, when Marshall and Zak Hardaker collided while attempting to field Tui Lolohea’s high kick. The Red Devils moved the ball wide to the left from the resulting scrum and Derrell Olpherts provided the finish.
Half-time: Wigan Warriors 10-6 Salford Red Devils
Wigan came out from the changing rooms stronger. Hardaker latched hold of a Jarrod Sammut kick through to restore their two-score lead.
Salford almost hit-back through Lolohea on his debut, but his try was disallowed and the Warriors went up the other end for Marshall to claim his second try of the game.
Kris Welham pulled one back for Salford, hitting Jackson Hastings’ short pass near the line in the 77th minute. The roles were reversed moments later, as Welham put Hastings clear before play was called back for a scrum.
Oliver Partington then cemented the result, pouncing on a grubber-kick beneath the posts.
The Red Devils will now look to continue their impressive home form and record a third successive victory at the The Salford Stadium when they host Huddersfield Giants on Thursday night. Tickets for the wellbeing fixture have been reduced and are available here HERE.
